Do your socks mysteriously vanish in the dryer? Do you toss bras and other hand-wash-only undergarments in the wash, and sometimes find them mangled? This simple mesh bag works up quickly, and is great for corralling your socks and protecting your unmentionables.

The bottom of the bag is crocheted flat, and the turn to the sides is accomplished by crocheting through the back loops and working in the round. A couple of knitted I-cord drawstrings capped off with crocheted rounds finish off the bag, enabling it to close securely in the wash.

This pattern requires a small amount of simple knitting in addition to the crochet: the two I-cord drawstrings. The only sewing involves attaching the drawstring knobs to the ends of the drawstrings.

Materials
Crochet hook: G/6 – 4.25mm
Knitting needles: two US 5/3.75mm DPNs
Yarn needle for weaving in yarn tails and attaching drawstring ends
Yarn: worsted-weight (4) machine-washable; 5oz/142g, 240yds

Notes on yarn selection: Since this bag is meant to go through the wash, choose a yarn that can stand up to repeated washing and drying. The sample shown in here was knit with Lily Sugar’n Cream cotton yarn, an economical choice. Since cotton yarn isn’t always colorfast, I recommend a white or undyed selection. My sample bag used just under two skeins of Sugar’n Cream white.

You can customize the size of your bag to your own household’s needs. My sample is about 11” x 4” across the bottom and about 10” from bottom to top. It holds roughly a week’s worth of socks for a single person, or a couple of average-sized bras.
