The Metallic Twist Hat
This hat utilizes a mixture of twisted stitches and garter to create an interesting textured fabric, with enough changes in stitch patterns to keep it fun but still relatively simple to work resulting in a finished hat which is just as enjoyable to wear. The matching Shawl is also available.
Knitting skills & techniques used: Intermediate :
Casting on, binding off, knitting, purling. Working twisted stitches by knitting through the back loops and involving K2togs, and Right and Left Twists stitch patterns.
Materials: Requires approx 144 metres / 157 yards of DK weight yarn.
I used Yak DK, a yarn by The Wool Barn for the sample, which is a merino, silk & Yak blend, but any DK weight yarn that offers good drape and stitch definition will be
fine. The following yarn usage amounts are an approximate guide. These are approx yardage amounts I used of each colour.
The Wool Barn, ‘YAK DK’ DK weight yarn (60% Wool - Superwash Merino, 20%
Silk, 20% Yak)
Yarn A : Rosewood, (reddish brown) (actual amount used 23 meters / 25 yards)
Yarn B : Denim, (indigo) (actual amount used 23 metres / 25 yards)
Yarn C : Nomad, (Silver) (actual amount used 64 metres / 70 yards)
Yarn D : Pecan, (golden) (actual amount used 34 metres / 37 yards)
Needles: 5mm / US 8, (& 4mm / US 6 for brim) 16”/40 cm circular needles/ longer cord for magic loop method / DPNs for crown decreases. You’ll need DPN’s /long cord length for
using magic loop method in the larger size for small circumference knitting as the crown decreases rapidly reduces the stitches.
Notions: cable needle / DPN, tapestry needle / crochet hook to weave ends
Gauge: 4” (10 cm) on 5 mm/US 8 needles (after blocking).
21.5 sts & 40 rounds (in Garter stitch in the round)
22 sts 32 rounds (in twisted stockinette stitch - knit all stitches through the back loop - in the round )
Please be aware that incorrect Gauge can affect finished measurements / yarn usage.
Approximate Finished Measurements: To adjust for the kind of brim fitting you prefer, you can either work your ribbing in the smaller needle size listed here or stick with the same larger body of the hat needle to also knit the ribbing for a more relaxed fit.
Circumference: Ribbing on smaller needles (4mm)
15”/ 41cm, (7.5” / 21cm, lying flat, as sample, which fits a 23” / 59cm head circumference)
Length before crown decreases: 7” from cast on edge.
Total length: 8.5” from cast on edge
‘Slouch’ Note: It is not designed to be a very slouchy
beanie, but you can add more ‘slouch’ if you wish to by working extra rounds at certain points in the pattern where basically you will be working repeating instructions.
