The pdf includes the patterns for both the hat and the scarf. The gauge above is for the hat. The gauge on the scarf is 3.5 st/1 inch using size 10 needles. You will need two balls of each color to make both the hat and the scarf. Should you choose to just knit the hat only or the scarf only, you will need one ball of each color. The pattern is created with knits, purls, and slipped stitches.
