The Middle Earth Adventure Socks pattern is a basic sock pattern with a couple of unique elements. The socks are knit cuff down, with a heel flap and gusset, and an anatomical toe. It is knit in 2 x 2 ribbing for the cuff, and then a stockinette foot with an optional princess sole, which makes these socks super comfy for anyone with sensitive feet! The princess sole is a reverse stockinette sole so the knit side is what is touching your feet (nice and smooth!). These are knit with fingering weight yarn held double (or you can use DK). I used two sock sets for my first sample, holding the two main colourways together for the marled sock body, and the two contrast colourways together for the marled heel and toe. For my second and third samples I used one sock set, and held the main colourway double for the body and the contrast colourway double for the heel and toe.
SIZES OFFERED:
-measurement is the circumference around the ball of the foot (rounded to the nearest 0.25 inch/0.5 cm)
Size - Circumference (unstretched) - Circumference (stretched)
X-Small - ~6.5 inches / 16.5 cm - Fits up to ~ 8-8.5 inches / 20-21 cm
Small - ~7.25 inches / 18 cm - Fits up to ~ 8.5-9 inches / 21-22.5 cm
Medium - ~8 inches / 20 cm - Fits up to ~ 9-9.5 inches / 22.5-24 cm
Large - ~8.75 inches / 22 cm - Fits up to ~ 9.5-10.5 inches / 24-26 cm
X-Large - ~9.25 inches / 23 cm - Fits up to ~ 10.5-11.5 inches / 26-29 cm
Note: These measurements are based on my sample piece; yours may vary slightly depending on gauge and tension. Please choose a size where the measurement of the circumference of the ball of your foot falls within the unstretched-stretched range. A rule of thumb that I have seen is that a sock should be made with about 15-20% negative ease (eg. my foot circumference is 8.5 inches / 21 cm, I would want a sock that has about 6.75-7.25 inch / 17-18 cm circumference), but you don’t need to follow that exactly. I prefer a snugger sock so I knit the XS. The length of the socks is customizable based on your foot length, so only base your size on the foot circumference.
NEEDLES RECOMMENDED:
US3/3.25 mm - 32+ inch circulars for magic loops method (you can also use 9 inch circulars or DPNs if you prefer, though pattern is written for magic loop method)
may need other size needles to meet gauge
GAUGE:
Stockinette, in the round:
4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 24 sts x 32 rounds
Ribbing, in the round:
4” x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 24 sts x 40 rounds
Note: If your stitch gauge is correct but your row gauge is off a little, you’ll be ok, because you will be customizing the number of rounds used anyway to match the length of your foot.
YARN REQUIRED:
This design is intended to be worked with fingering weight yarn held double, but you could also work with 1 strand of DK. See below options for yarn requirements.
Note: Main Colour = MC, Contrast Colour = CC
Option 1 (marled, fingering) - 2 sock sets of fingering weight yarn (will be held double), or 2 colours of fingering weight for the MC and 2 colours of fingering weight for the CC
Option 2 (non marled, fingering) - 1 sock set of fingering yarn (will be held double), or 1 colour of fingering weight for the MC and 1 colour of fingering weight for the CC
Option 3 (non-marled, DK) - 1 sock set of DK weight yarn, or 1 colour of DK weight yarn for the MC and 1 colour of DK weight for the CC
I used Fantasy Fibers Yarn Co - Banff Sock (437 yds / 400 m per 100 g ball) for my first 2 samples.
Sample #1 - Uruk Hai and Rivendell held together for the MC, Trees of Lothlorien and Mithril held together for the CC
Sample #2 - Wood Elves held double for the MC, Lorien by Moonlight held double for the CC
I used Ruby and Roses Soft Rose (437 yds per 100 g ball) for my 3rd sample.
Sample #3 - Lilacs at Midnight held double for the MC, Wisteria held double for the CC
YARDAGE REQUIRED:
Yardage/weight varies between different fingering weight yarns, so if you are using yarn with a different yardage/gram ratio, make sure to calculate based on the yardage, not the weight.
Note: Yardage estimates below are the yardage required for both socks, per strand, as it is designed for 2 strands of fingering held double. Option 1 would follow below yardages per strand. Option 2 would add together MC 1 and 2 for your total MC yardage, and add together CC 1 and 2 for your total CC yardage. Option 3 (DK) would match the yardage of 1 strand.
Size - Main Colour (each strand) - Contrast Colour (each strand)
X-Small - ~39 g / 170 yds / 156 m - ~9.5 g / 42 yds / 38 m
Small - ~46 g / 200 yds / 184 m - ~12 g / 52 yds / 48 m
Medium - ~54 g / 236 yds / 216 m - ~13.5 g / 60 yds / 52 m
Large - ~62 g / 270 yds / 248 m - ~15.6 g / 68 yds / 62 m
X-Large - ~70 g / 306 yds / 280 m - ~18.6 g / 82 yds / 74 m
Yardage is an approximation. I have included a fair bit of foot length for each size so this should accommodate all foot lengths and will likely be an overestimation. If you have extremely long feet, I would go with a little extra yardage just to be safe!
