I designed these simple mitts for my middle school knitting class. I wanted them to learn how to cable and how to measure and knit from a gauge swatch. I didn’t want to overwhelm them with too many skills at once, so these are knit flat and seamed up the side, leaving an opening for the thumb. This eliminates learning how to use dpns and how to knit a thumb gusset. This is a terrific beginner pattern to move beyond the garter stitch scarf! Both mitts are knit identically - just flip the second mitt around to seam.

Skills used include: knit, purl, cabling with a cable needle(instructions given), using stitch markers, and mattress stitch. If you are not sure how to do mattress stitch to seam, here is a link to a terrific video from KnittingHelp.com.
