Inspiration for this pattern: Winters here can be long and cold. I wanted to savour it rather than fight it. Imagine curling up with a nice warm drink, a toasty fire or some candle-light, a warm blanket on your lap, and savouring the peace and quiet that comes with a late-night winter snowfall. This is the perfect pattern for the peaceful nights after the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, for the calm nights at the beginning of the new year, for the cold, snowy nights when spring is still far away.

The pattern is written as a cuff-down sock, with a forethought heel (just like an afterthought heel, but with waste yarn in place so you don’t have to cut into your sock). It can be knit toe-up with some minor manipulation of the charts and instructions.

As with most colourwork, you can adjust the fit by adjusting the gauge (by going up or down in needle size) and you can go up to sport or DK weight yarn on a larger needle, if desired, for a larger foot size.

In my sample, I used 185 yds of dark blue and 194 yds of sparkly light blue on 2.75mm needles for the colourwork section, to fit a 9.5” foot.

Heels, toes and cuffs for my sample were done on 2.25 mm needles.

Size 10 (US) testers used a total of 467 - 475 yards for their pair of socks.

A 50g skein of each colour will suffice for up to size 8, or maybe 9. I recommend getting 100g skein of the “snow colour” for size 10 and up.
