Midsummer Flowers Socks
The summer solstice is a time for magic in many cultures. In Sweden, a Midsummer’s Eve ritual is said to be able to tell you who you are going to marry. You pick nine different kinds of flowers, as seen on these socks, while walking across nine fields - represented by the grey ‘stone walls’ in the pattern. Do all of this in silence. Then you place the flowers under your pillow, and that night you will dream of your true love. Try it! Or as this is a lot of work, maybe just wear these socks and see if that does the trick!
Finished and blocked socks measure:
Length of the foot: approx. 23 cm/9”.
Circumference: approx. 21 cm/8,3”.
Size can be adjusted by using smaller or larger sized needles or by adding or removing some rows.
The pattern specifies the yarns I have used for the two different versions, but any sock yarn of the same weight (100gr = 425 meters/465 yards or 50 g = 210 meters/230 yards) will work fine.
Main Colour is about 50 g, but if you want to be safe, buy a little extra. Pattern is written for magic loop, but double pointed needles work as well if you prefer that, just make sure to make necessary adjustments.
Duplicate stitching is utilized to add detail to pattern, without you having to carry more than two colours at a time.
Pattern is available in English and Swedish.
Techniques used: German Short Row Heel, Stranded Colourwork, Kitchener Stitch, Duplicate Stitch.
The pattern has links to my accompanying videos on Youtube which explain some of the technical aspects of the work (in English with English or Swedish subtitles): How to work with magic loop, how to create the heel, how to sew the kitchener stitch, how to sew the duplicate stitches.
