Midtown Me Mitts
Midtown Me Mitts are a quick knit (one test knitter finished a DK pair in approx. 3 hours!) and the pattern includes directions for both DK and 4-ply/fingering yarn, with notes for you to custom-fit the mitts slightly (longer … shorter … bigger circumference …). They also make a great last-minute gift because they knit up so quickly.
A chart for the faux-cable pattern is provided in addition to the written directions.
Construction: These mitts are knit in the round, starting at the wrist and working up to the top, with increases for a thumb gusset. The pattern runs up the entire mitt (no ribbing) and uses a small variety of stitches and yarn overs to create a faux cable with eyelet detail, which allows the mitts to stretch easily over the hand.
Finished Size: One size that fits an average hand of 7 to 8.5 inch (17 to 21 cm) circumference / approx. 9 inch (23 cm) length, but depending on the yarn you use and how many repeats you knit, the fit is flexible.
Yarn Requirements:
- 120 to 140 yards (109 to 128 m) of DK weight OR
- 100 to 120 yards (91 to 109 m) of 4-ply/fingering
Samples shown, top to bottom, use the following:
(red) Murky Depths Neptune in “Picante“ (merino).
(lavender) Old Maiden Aunt sport/DK in “What’s Your Damage” (alpaca/silk).
(solid blue) Old Maiden Aunt 4-ply in “Blackbird” (merino/cashmere/silk).
(blue variegated) Hedgehog Fibres Merino DK in “Kimono” (merino).
Needles: US size 5 / 3.75 mm (16” / 41 cm long) circular needles and DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge).
Gauge: Make sure to check your gauge to ensure a proper fit (it will also affect yarn usage and how aggressively you may want to block your mitts). Knit a gauge swatch: 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette =
> DK YARN - 18 sts / 26 rows
> 4-PLY YARN - 22 sts / 30 rows
Try on your mitts throughout the knitting process. I like mine extra long (including the thumb), and this pattern is for a longer rather than a shorter mitt fit.
These mitts have been test knitted.
