The Midwinter Solstice marks the longest night of the year. Traditionally celebrated with friends, family, feasting and fire, this is one of my favorite holidays.
When the sun rises after the Solstice the days will begin to get longer, the nights shorter, and Spring and Summer are on their way. But for one night before the Spring can come, Winter and the dark reign. On that night we need the light of our fires most of all. I can’t be near a crackling warm Yule Log all the time, so needed a knit to bring some light into the dark of winter.
The Midwinter Mitts are a fun, quick, intermediate Brioche knit. Worked in the round from the cuff up, they are less complex than they seem. The traditional Yule tree is created by switching the dominant color of your Brioche ribbing – don’t worry, garter stitches in between the white and green dominant sections make that a breeze. The piece de resistance of the mitts is a golden star, added to the top of the trees with embroidery after you finish the knitting.
Yarn: 100 yards each of 3 contrasting colors of DK weight (320 yards/100g) yarn, plus 3-4 yards of a 4th color for the star. Star can be worked in any weight yarn. Sample used Lattes and Llamas Geek-A-Long Sport Weight Yarn in Burning Love (red), Mutant Town (green), and Baskerville (white). Star was worked with scraps of left over heavy-fingering weight yarn.
NeedlesUS3 and US4 circular needles for working in magic loop or DPNs.
Gauge20 stitches = 4” in Brioche Ribbing. The mitts are very stretchy. You do not need to worry about getting exact gauge on this knit.
Sizing One size fits most. The brioche ribbing gives a lot of stretch, allowing this to fit most adult hands.
Designer Note: This pattern is worked in a simple brioche ribbing, increase and decrease motif. Between the tree portion and the hand sections you will work a garter stitch (alternating K and P) to prevent needing to work 2 sl1yo in a row.
