The Mighty Oak Hat is named after the 550- year-old oak trees at Sugarcreek Metro Park in Dayton, Ohio, where my family loves to hike. Just like these oak trees stand tall and mighty against the elements, so too does The Mighty Oak Hat stay durable and warm during everyday wear. I designed this hat for my husband who wanted a snug fitting hat to work in and for my son who needed a warm hat to play outside in during chilly weather days.

The double brim stays folded in place using a provisional cast on and knit together as you go method. Given that there is not a cast on edge, the brim is extremely stretchy and can fit a range of sizes. Choose the size that is closest to your head circumference for a stretchy and snug fit.

Sizes: Child/Youth (Small/Medium) Medium/Large (Large/Extra Large) Extra Large

Head circumference: 20 3⁄4 - 21 1⁄2 (21 5/8 - 22 1⁄2) 22 5/8 - 23 1⁄4 (23 3/8 -24 1⁄2) 24 5/8+ inches

Yarn Requirements:
These are just approximations. Total yarn usage will depend on the yarn you use (fiber content, ply, etc.), your personal gauge, and any modifications you make.

Worsted Weight:
Main Color (Brim) - 35 (40) 45 (50) 55 g / 73 (84) 94 (104) 115 yds
and
Contrast Color - 35 (40) 45 (50) 55 g / 73 (84) 94 (104) 115 yds

Suggested Needles: US 3 / 3.25mm – 16” circulars and preferred needles for small circumference knitting to shape the crown. (Use the needle size you need to obtain gauge.) A second pair of 16” circulars of similar size will also be needed to pick up the live Sts from the provisional CO.

Notions: Scrap yarn, 6 stitch markers to mark beginning of round and the decrease repeats at the crown, tapestry needle, and scissors.

Gauge: 22 Sts and 27 rows = 4” / 10cm on stockinette in the round, blocked.
