Mighty Oak Shrug
The MIGHTY OAK Shrug is part of my MIGHTY OAK COLLECTION of designs, has an origami style construction, & is a fully reversible & versatile garment, designed as an easy, outer layer to slip on when you want something to keep your shoulders & back area warm. It can be styled multiple ways & photos of various styling options are included in the pattern.
The yarns I used in the design of this garment are both DK weight:
Skeinz Southlander DK (Silver Version) has a recommended gauge of 20sts x 26rows on 4mm /USA 6 (Silver version)
Skeinz Vintage DK (Brown Version) has a recommended gauge of 22sts x 30 rows on 4mm/USA 6.
There are 2 stitch patterns used in the main body of the design, which is knit sideways as a one piece rectangle, before folding & performing some very minimal seaming to secure the armhole areas.
A crochet cast on is used to mimic the appearance of the purl bind off used, & this helps to prepare the garment for an easy flat seamed finish. Links are included to some great YouTube tutorials re the cast on, and an easy photo tutorial is included in the pattern, with step by step instructions also given re the seaming process.
Guidance is given in the pattern regarding the choosing of sizes.
Sizes 1 & 2 are designed to (loosely) fit a bust size of up to 92cm /36’’ (firmer fit at upper measurement end)
Size 3 is designed to (loosely) fit from bust size 97cm /38’’ up to 127cm /50’’
The cast on stitch count determines the back length, so each size is fully customizable.
Although the sizing is generous in this design, I worked hard to to see if I could include a larger size or 2 - but because of the way it’s constructed, I came to the conclusion that the only way to make this happen would be to use thicker yarn & larger needles … so when there are 3 sizes to choose from in DK weight, there ARE more options.
Please note: Although instructions are given in the pattern for assembling the shrug, you will also be able to download a separate file with a more detailed description of the process, once you have purchased the pattern.
