I didn’t have to invent the wheel again when designing this classic, stylish cardigan. I have already used the beautiful cable/eyelet-pattern in my (tested) designs https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/milestone
as well as https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/mini-milestone
Since those two designs were released I have wanted to use the same patterning for a cardigan….. and here it is:)

Design
As I knit lots of cardigans I know that the classic ones are those I always return to. They are so easy to wear, and I can mix and match them with almost any style. The Milestone cardigan features a beautiful cable/eyelet pattern embellishing both the fronts of the cardigan as well as the sleeves. The cable and lace-pattern is an easily memorized pattern repeat of 8 rounds/rows only:)
Waist-shaping is optional, and you could easily add or subtract the length of the body and sleeves. The buttonbands and the neckline is worked in a contrasting color to add interest and make it a bit more stylish:)

Construction

The cardigan is worked seamlessly, (apart from one tiny seam at the top of each sleeve to join the body. If you hate seams, this seam can be avoided by a 3-needle bind-off. The lower body is worked flat and bottom up to underarms, from a ribbed hem, followed by patterning and stockinette sts.
The sleeves are worked in the round from the ribbed cuffs followed by patterning and stockinette sts.

At underarms body and sleeves are joined and work is continued flat with decreases for body and sleeves until top of the sleeves.
The button-bands and neckline are worked from picked-up sts.

Materials Yarn: I used Hjelholts Mohair 7/2 to work the cardigan. This fingering weight yarn comes in skeins of 175 meters/191 yards and 50gr/1.76oz. You will need 6/7/7/7/8/8/9/9 skeins of MC (dark grey), 1 skein of CC (light grey) of this specific yarn to work the cardigan. If you substitute yarn it should give the same gauge. The testers of my Milestone sweater/dress (worked at same gauge) chose the following yarn qualities:

Needles: I used needle size 3mm/US2.5. This is a suggestion only, as you need to work according to gauge and might go up or down in needle size. You will need 1 long, circular needle for the lower and upper body, a set of dpns (or a circular needle with soft wire, if working the magic loop) for the sleeves, 1 smaller, circular needle for the ribbed edge of the neckline, straigth or circular needles for the buttonbands. You might use one needle-size down for the ribbed edge of the sleeves/neckline/buttonbands. You will need 1 cable-needle.
Notions Removable stitch-markers. Separate holders. 11 (or more/less) buttons, 2cm/0.75” across.

Sizes Finished bust measurements (after washing/blocking and worked at gauge): 34.5/36.5/38.5/40.5/42/44/46/48”. Length of sleeves and body can be modified to your liking.

Gauge 24 sts and 32-34 rows.

The pattern
The cable/eyelet-pattern is both charted and written out, row-by-row (round-by-round for the sleeves) . All measurements are given in cm’s as well as in inches. All necessary stitch-counts are given.

Knitting skills
Techniques involved are: 3-needle bind off method, picking up of stitches. You need to be able to follow charts or written instructions for simple cables/eyelets.
