Want to give your feet a treat, but aren’t sure you have the patience to knit socks in 4-ply yarn? DK socks are the answer! They’re much quicker than 4-ply socks, but still fit inside your shoes. DK socks also make great gifts, and knitting in DK weight yarn also frees up more knitting time for you to knit something for yourself (maybe a pair of socks in your size!).
The Milk Chocolate Socks are knitted from the top down, with a heel-flap and gusset construction. They’re my basic DK socks, knitted in stocking stitch with a slipped stitch pattern on the heel flap.
The Milk Chocolate Socks are written in sizes to fit the whole family [ten sizes, in circumferences from 7.5 cm (3 in) to 28.5 cm (11.5 in)] – if you have an especially knitworthy family to knit for, you could make a full set of matching socks!
The socks are knitted in a wool blend DK with 25% nylon, which makes the yarn stronger and increases its lifespan. If you’re knitting for someone extra-special, why not see if your favourite indie dyer has a wool/nylon DK weight yarn that you could try as a treat to yourself?
Milk Chocolate Socks is the first pattern in my DK Selection-Box of Socks– a collection of DK socks, all named in honour of chocolates in a selection box. Why not check out the other patterns in the collection too?
Sizes
Sizes A (B, C // D, E, F // G, H, I // J)
Finished circumference: 7.5 (10, 12.5 // 14.5, 17, 19 // 21.5, 24, 26 // 28.5) cm [3 (4, 5 // 5.75, 6.75, 7.75 // 8.5, 9.5, 10.5 // 11.5) in]
Designed to be worn with approximately 10% negative ease. Choose a sock with a finished circumference approximately 10% smaller than the measured circumference of your foot around the widest part.
Tension
26 sts and 36 rnds = 10 cm (4 in) in stocking stitch worked in the round on 3 mm (US 2.5) needles after wet blocking, or size needed to obtain correct tension.
Yarn
Single colour socks
40 (70, 105 // 145, 195, 260 // 295, 375, 455 // 520) m [45 (80, 115 // 160, 215, 285 // 325, 415, 500 // 570) yds]
Two colour socks
- MC: 30 (55, 80 // 115, 150, 200 // 225, 290, 350 // 395) m [30 (60, 85 // 125, 165, 215 // 245, 320, 385 // 430) yds]
- CC: 10 (15, 25 // 30, 45, 60 // 70, 85, 105 // 125) m [15 (20, 30 // 35, 50, 70 // 80, 95, 115 // 140) yds]
Yardages are approximate as the amount of yarn used will depend on the length of the foot, which is adjustable.
I would recommend using a dedicated sock yarn that is tightly plied wool and has some nylon content for durability.
Needles
This pattern is written to be needle-neutral. You can use your preferred method for knitting in the round.
- 3 mm (US 2.5) DPNs, 15 cm (6 in), set of 5, or
- 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needle, at least 80 cm (32 in) in length to work magic loop, or
- 3 mm (US 2.5) circular needle, 22.5 cm 9 in in length (note that if you are using a short circular, you will need to switch to DPNs or magic loop to work the toe)
Notions
- Fixed/removable stitch markers x 5
- Sock blockers (optional)
Pattern notes
The instructions are for the smallest size, with larger sizes in parentheses: A (B, C // D, E, F // G, H, I // J). If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
The sample is knitted in West Yorkshire Spinners Aire Valley DK (DK, 230 m per 100 g ball, 75% wool, 25% nylon) in Purple Haze. This yarn is discontinued. Alternative yarn suggestions can be found in this blog post.
