The finished bird, when worked in 4ply yarn, will measure approximately 11cm high and 15cm beak to tail. This will of course vary with weights of yarn and hook/tension. For a larger bird work in double knit, aran or chunk but the results will not be the same

This pattern is fairly easy to follow but requires basic crochet knowledge. It is written in US terms but easy to convert to UK.

It is worked in African Flower shapes with instructions in both graph and written form with photographs and handy hints to follow for assembly.

This pattern is written in English.

For Bruce I used around 15g of Hobbycraft (UK) Soft and Silky 4ply in white and light green, and 10g in yellow and dark blue (under the tail) Scheepjes Invicta Extra for the
head stripes (optional as shown on first page). A tiny length of blue and gold for the beak and black and purple for the face spots. You can obviously use any colours or brand you fancy. You can make this in any weight yarn, but use the smallest hook you can manage. Mercerised cotton type yarn prevents too much stretch so the stuffing doesn’t show plus it isn’t fluffy so the pattern of the African Flower shows more clearly. Scheepjes Catona is my all time favourite yarn for these birds, I just happened to have the colours I wanted in the different yarn. The yarn weight equivalent of 4 ply is sport, fingering, 2 weight etc
I used a 2mm crochet hook Long darning needle Toy stuffing 8mm safety eyes (adjust eye size if using different weight yarn) Stitch markers and Dressmakers pins.
Abbreviations Full written instructions of how to make the shapes are at the end of the pattern. Instructions are written in English but in US terms
sc = single crochet dc = double crochet hdc = half double crochet
tc = treble crochet (yarn round 2x) dt = double treble crochet (yarn round 3x) inc = increase dec = decrease mc = magic circle/magic ring sl st = slip stitch
