This pattern is super simple and easy for a beginner. There really is no gauge, and you can make this using any type of sturdier yarn. I would not recommend a softer baby yarn or yarn like Caron Simply soft. You want something that will stand up and hold its shape. You can also use more strands and a bigger hook if you would like. Really, you can do just about whatever you want and it should turn out beautifully!
