I was inspired by the vibrant Fasching parades (German pre-Lent celebrations) that take place in the early months each year when designing these socks. One of the elements of fun at a Fasching parade is being the target of some harmless and hilarious mischief. At my first parade, I was dragged into the route to dance, smeared with colorful greasepaint, and watched other parade goers have their shoe laces stolen. The eccentric sights and celebratory mood is something I’ll never forget.

These socks lend themselves well to high contrast pairings; this pattern is also a great way to use self-patterning and variegated skeins. I’ve designed two versions of this sock: version one utilizes two colors, whereas version two brings in a third for contrasting heels and cuffs (great way to use 20g minis!). There are so many magical possibilities with pairing yarns—have fun!

With directions for top-down and toe-up, this multi sized pattern is written for knitting with the Magic Loop method, but can be converted to DPN’s if that is your preference. The construction of the sock utilizes stranded color work throughout the body, a unique striped toe, and a short row heel. The short row heel instructions are for a traditional “wrap and turn” style, but feel free to substitute your favorite short row heel (such as the Fish Lips Kiss Heel) if desired.
