This design was inspired by a hat worn by Maggie Smith in the film The Lady in the Van, based on Alan Bennett’s memoir with the same title. You can view a preview of the film here. While a pixie head covering is often considered suitable for children, the Miss Shepherd hat is so warm, comfortable, and practical that adults will enjoy wearing this style, too. The bottom neck is cast on first; next increases and decreases are worked to create the point at the top. After blocking, the garter stitch band is folded under and slip stitched, to give a smooth look and comfortable fit around the face. The ties are worked separately and are sewn onto the hat, and the back is seamed together as well. Despite a little bit of sewing, this hat works up quickly since the cable pattern is simple and most of the project is worked in garter stitch. You can read more about this project on my blog.
