Changing colours:
This dress is designed to go with the 2024 HS advent colours (5 complementary skeins), though you can, of course, use any colours you like! If you are knitting a dress, you will need more than 5 skeins. In that case, I recommend knitting with one thread black silk mohair (for instance HS Silk Mohair in the colour James) held with more colourful yarn. If you are knitting a sweater, 5 skeins should be sufficient (though remember that you are still knitting with two strands the whole way). You can decide in which order you use your colours, though if you are using the 2024 HS advent colourways, these are dyed so that they will complement each other if you use them in the order you unwrapped them.
Measure yourself and decide how long you would like your dress to be. Divide that number by five. For instance, if you want your dress to be 120 cm. long, you divide 120 by 5, which equals 24 cm. This means you need to knit 24 cm with each colour. However, in order to achieve a smooth transition between the different colours, you need to stripe in the new colour (i.e. knit every other round with different colours) starting 2 cm. earlier, in other words at 22 cm. Continue striping in the new colour for a total of 4 cm before you transition entirely into the new colour.
This means you knit 4 cm of “striping” in between each colour. You subtract 2 cm of length from both the top and bottom of your solid colour blocks, which means that your single-colour sections end up being 20 cm long (24 cm – 2 + 2 cm colour change at top and bottom).
Continue until you have used all five colours, and your dress has achieved the desired length.
