This cushy, garter stitch mat can be any size from a cellphone pad to a doggy bed! This could be a lining for an oval basket or an Easter egg placemat. Use whatever gauge fits your need.
The pattern is from The Ladies’ Knitting and Netting Book by Miss Watts, pattern #33, published in 1840 London. Miss Watts writes “Surround (the mat) with a fringe” but that’s up to you.

Skills needed: cast on, knit, kf&b, k2tog and bind off in knit stitch.

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.

36 yards of #10 crochet thread will make one oval 3.75” by 5.5” mat at gauge.
