Inspired by the elaborately decorated entrance to the Mission Dolores Basilica, the twisted and cabled stitches of the Mission Dolores mittens add texture and interest to this traditional, bottom-up mitten pattern.

While the Mission itself was founded in 1776 as the Mission San Francisco de Asís (named for Saint Francis of Assisi), it quickly became known as Mission Dolores for a nearby creek. The present Mission Chapel is an adobe structure with a unique sanctuary mural, both created by Ohlone labor from 1788–1791. The Chapel is the oldest intact building in the city of San Francisco, having survived the 1906 earthquake and subsequent fires. Ostensibly built to convert the Indigenous people of Alta (Upper) California, the Mission devastated the Ohlone culture and population.

Adjacent to the Chapel, the Basilica was built after the earthquake. The Spanish Baroque ornamentation of the front entrance was added later, inspired by the Churrigueresque Revival of the Panama-California Exposition in 1926. This style of expressive decoration was popular in Spain in the late 17th century.
