1/6/21: This pattern was taken down to be redrafted. After extensive work the design, though visually similar, has been changed so much that we felt it necessary to upload as a completely different pattern. You can find the new pattern at:

When my husband asked me to make him a hat that covered his ears, but not a traditional earflap hat with the tails, and with some extra fabric to keep the back of his neck warm, I spent a couple of hours looking at options on Ravelry. Not finding anything I really liked, because I really hate weaving in ends and so dismissed many options that had the flaps attached, or that my husband liked, because he wanted substantial flaps, not little “nubs”, I decided to create my own pattern. After some thought, I realized that mitered corners would create the flaps without having to knit them separately, and thus this hat was born.
There are two sizes listed (the small size is pictured), which should provide enough variety to fit most heads. The smaller size will fit a child’s head, and will stretch plenty to comfortably fit a small adult’s head. The larger size will loosely fit a small adult head, and will comfortably stretch to fit a large adult head.
