This pattern is based on a design that was previously published for free on Tumblr as Mitered Earflap Hat (by AJ Atwood), which is no longer available. It has been redone with a different gauge and yarn, the instructions modified for greater clarity, and for a broader range of sizes. The crown decreases, specifically, have been significantly altered for cleaner lines. So little of the original pattern, other than the original intent, remains that I felt it would be best to launch this version as new pattern.

When my husband asked me to make him a hat that covered his ears, but not a traditional earflap hat with the tails, and with some extra fabric to keep the back of his neck warm, I spent a couple of hours looking at options on Ravelry. Not finding anything I really liked, because I really hate weaving in ends and so dismissed many options that had the flaps attached, or that my husband disliked because he wanted substantial flaps, not little “nubs”, I decided to create my own pattern. After some thought, I realized that mitered corners would create the flaps without having to knit them separately, and thus this hat was born.

This pattern has not been tested other than by AJ themself.
