Mitered Squares Bonnet
As an introduction to mitered squares, this is good. To my knowledge, two other knitters have successfully followed it as their mitered square learning lesson.
I wrote it, because an elderly African woman saw me knitting and asked me how to knit caps that tied on for her grandchildren in Africa. She knew how to knit, but only on straight needles, She steadfastly refused hear anything about using either a circular needle or double-pointed needles, and she didn’t want to seam anything up. Of her demands, this cap was born.
You need to know:
knit stitch
knit two together
purl stitch
purl two together
pick up stitches through the back loop of an existing ‘chain’ selvedge
how to count
crochet hook cast on (Search YouTube for the video that suits you.)
Yarn: whatever takes your fancy
Needles: size proportionate to your yarn - straight or circular - knitter’s choice
Hook: same size as needles.
Stitch markers: - two, but one must be removable**
Paper/pencil or ‘device’ on which to record your numbers. Believe me when I say you won’t remember such details. (I strongly suggest a project page on Ravelry as the best, unlosable place to keep notes. I’ve learned this the hard way. :slightly_frowning_face: )
Photos:
Top: baby yarn with only a single strand for the whole hat, plus a bit more for the ties.
Second down: sport weight with a different strand of yarn for each mitred square
Third down: inside of first with all the ends hanging out. Lots of ends!
