This design tries to explore stranded knitting by tackling the subject with a different approach: Fair isle or Jaquard has mostly been worked in the ubiquitous repetitive small motifs in colour-work. But there are so many different ways that colours can interact with each other and they go way beyond small repeating motifs used in Norwegian colour-work or traditional embroidery throughout the world.
Mitsouko wants to explore something a bit more experimental, large-scale and conceptual! The idea is mostly akin to abstract large scale paintings in general, while the specific interpretation is drawn from the scrollwork pattern on Guerlain’s Mitsouko perfume bottle.
The influences of Art Deco and Japonesque elements, that were the rage when the perfume was launched, are translated here in the interconnecting spirals throughout the stranded knitting. The resulting motif also creates a gradient of colour, that travels seamlessly from one hue to another.
But this pattern provides many options, in an effort to offer various choices on this different colour-work concept:
1) This design can be knitted as-is by following the given charts in three sizes.
2) Then there is a minimal and simple, striped option available, called Mitsouko’s lover.
3) Finally you (or your child) can use the given charts to draw your very own, already graded, personalised abstract large scale knit design to work with!
Just print the provided empty chart in your size and experiment by following some of the basic stranded knitting rules given in the pattern!
Because of the stranded colour-work you get a dense and warm hat, that is still light, since it is knitted in fingering weight yarn while the longer ribbing and slightly larger body can be worn slouchy or tucked in for a more elegant beanie effect.
