Mitten Wonderland
About the pattern
Mitten Wonderland is a fun stranded mitten design with an afterthought thumb. The back of the mitten features a winter scenery with two options to choose from and an option to mix and match images to make your own. There are 3 options of patterning for the palm section of the mitten (Stars, Snowflakes, and Trees); as well as 3 options for the tip of the mittens (depicting different phases of the moon). All three palm designs are fully compatible with either of the two back options. Finally, I included a few extra charts that didn’t make it into the sample mittens and a couple of blank charts for you to play with if you feel like creating your own little corner of the Mitten Wonderland.
Materials
• US Size 0 (2mm) set of dpns or circular needles (for Magic Loop method)
US size 00(1.75mm) for ribbing (optional)
• Fingering weight yarn (I used Knit Picks Stroll Solids, Glimmer, and Tonal) – 231y/50 g (211m/50g)
Background Color (BC) – 153 y (140 m), Contrast Color 1 (CC1) – 44 y (40 m), Contrast Color 2 (CC2) – 66 y (60 m), Contrast Color 3 (CC3) – 9 y (8 m)
Small scraps of Christmas Red & Green (optional) for adding Christmas lights details (if desired, small beads or sequins can be used instead) and a little more yellow for windows
• Tapestry needle (for adding details in duplicate stitch)
Notes
- Size: The mittens are 68 stitches. With recommended yarn, needles, and gauge they’ll fit an 8-9” circumference hand. To enlarge use larger needles. The stitch count can also be easily increased to 72 stitches by adding one stitch in BC on each side of the back of the mitten and each side of the palm section (4 stitches total). In round 80, remember to decrease these added stitches first, then continue with the pattern as charted. An additional chart for a 72-stitch wrist section is provided. There is also a wrist chart for a 64-stitch wrist section included. If you choose a 64-stitch version, don’t forget to increase by 4 stitches (68 stitches total) in the last round of the wrist section.
- Stranded colorwork: The pattern is charted with some written instructions. There are no row-by-row written instructions available. Follow the charts from left to right. Some sections of the design require you to carry yarn over longer stretches of one color. Make sure to catch longer floats using preferred method.
- Thumb: The mitten has an afterthought thumb construction. The pattern does not explain this technique in detail. You have to be familiar with the technique prior to purchase.
