Mittens
This mittens pattern was written for use with the Dean and Bean’s Sock Machine, and is intended for intermediate users.
Worked bottom up, your mittens include a mock rib hung hem and gusset thumb. The top is kitchenered shut (the same as a sock toe), and the gusset thumb includes a “mini toe” for the tip. We’ve also included suggestions for how to do an open tip.
The gauge is meant to be tight, as you want a mitten more fitted to the hand. We used a 60-needle cylinder. Our pattern was based on a medium sized hand - 7.5” circumference at the widest part of the hand, and 7.5” length from the bottom of the palm to the top of the tallest finger.
You can easily knit a pair of mittens with 200yds of lightweight sock yarn. If you want to double the thickness, you will need more than 400yds.
