Mittens Both Ways!
These fun mittens are knit completely opposite but manage to match in the end!
Designed to maximize learned techniques for my beginning knitting students, the first mitten is knit top down and the second one is knit cuff up.
Alternate directions are given for adding the forethought thumb for the second pair you make- once you’ve decided which starting orientation is your favorite.
Knit in a luxury blend of cashmere and merino, you will reach for these cozy mittens all winter long.
Techniques Used:
Turkish cast on
German twisted cast on
Knitting in the round with magic loop
Forethought thumb
KFB increases
SSK and k2tog decreases
Alternating knits and purls in the round
Picking up stitches
Binding off
Kitchener stitch grafting
Drawstring finish for thumb
Finished Measurements:
Gauge: 27 sts and 39 rows equals 4”(10 cm)
Length: 10.75” (28 cm) cuff to tip, thumb is 3” (7.5 cm) long
Materials Needed:
Yarn:
65 grams (240 yards) of cashmere/merino sportweight yarn. Sample knit in Wollmeise Blend.
Needles:
Size 4 US/ 3.5 mm 32” (81 cm) circular needle (or size needed to achieve gauge)
Notions:
Locking stitch marker (optional for marking beginning of round needle)
Waste yarn
Tapestry needle
This pattern was designed to be used during one-on-one tutoring sessions, to teach simple beginner knitting. It has been professionally tech edited.

Errata: The original version of the pattern is missing the instructions for Round 2 of the top down mitten.
It should read: Mitten top increases: Round 1: knit all stitches Round 2: k1, KFB, k to next to last st on needle 1, KFB, k1. Repeat on second needle. (4 sts increased) Repeat rounds 1 and 2 until you have 28 stitches per needle.
