Mittens on Straight Needles
These mittens of done on Straight Needles with a seam up the side of the mittens. The cuff is done in a 1x1 rib with the rest of the mitten in Stockinette Stitch. The top has decreases to close up the fingers so cool air does not find its way in.
The sizes fit hands measuring across palm from 2.25” to 4”.
There is a mitten speck on the last page, so you can mix and match sizes. You can make the cuff longer or if you have short fingers, use a different amount of knitted rows to make an ideal fit.
They are knitted on 10” straight needles size 6 to make a tighter weave for warmer mittens with worsted weight yarn. Plymouth Encore works nicely because if its fiber content of 75% Acrylic and 25% Wool. Not much else is needed to make the mittens except 2 stitch markers and a tapestry needle.
Most yarns come in 200 or more yards per skein. However some are on 100 yard put ups, So it would be between 1 and 2 skeins depending on the yards per ball.
The mittens look great worked with self striping yarn, tweed or multi colors spun together. Make a matching hat and scarf to complete the look.
