Mix and Match Mosaic
Introduction
This design is made to inspire you to be a designer too! I’ve designed 18 parts that can be mixed and matched any way you like. You can use all 18 in the order that is given to make the blanket that I made. Or you can choose your favorites and play with them.
The mixing and matching allows you to make all kinds of different blankets, pillows/cushions, a wrap, a table runner, a bed runner, a scarf, a bed spread. Anything you can think of! And all your own design!
And I’ve included three different ways to finish your project: twisted fringe, a thicker fringe or a double border. All is explained in this pattern.
How it works
Option one is to crochet all 18 parts in their order. If you do that, you’ll have the same blanket that I made.
Option two is to make your own design.
Step 1: Cut out the grey and white versions (mock-ups, as shown in the picture on the left) of all eighteen different parts. They are full size when crocheted with Stylecraft Special DK and a 4,5mm/G hook.
Step 2: Play with the parts and come up with a design you love.
Step 3: Decide on the width of the project you are making. When crocheted with Stylecraft Special DK and a 4,5mm/G hook each repeat of 24 stitches is 13,75 cm/5.5 inches.
Step 4: Crochet your design in the order you’ve created. You can do that by using the graphs or you can use the written directions. Step 5: Decide on which way you want to finish your project. Instructions for twisted fringe, a thicker fringe or a double border to hide all the ends are included in the pattern. Then finish your project in your chosen way.
This pattern contains
- A pdf download with 45 pages
- Written and photo tutorial on mosaic crochet (known as Tinna’s method, overlay mosaic crochet, one row mosaic)
- Tutorial on how to read the graphs
- Graphs for the pattern
- Written instructions for the pattern
- Instructions for twisted fringe, thicker fringe and a double border are included.
You can make
- The same blanket as I made using all design parts. The blanket measures 110 x 190 centimeters/43.5 inches x 75 inches, but you can of course make it wider.
- Anything else you’d like. I’ve included design ideas and instructions for a bed runner, a symmetrical blanket, a cushion cover, a table runner, a scarf and a wrap.
Color use
This pattern looks great when you only use two colors that look good together and have a nice contrast. You can see how that works in my blanket, where I used Stylecraft Special DK in Gold for color A and Walnut for color B.
In my cushion I’ve used two different colors brown (Stylecraft Special DK in Walnut and Dark Brown) for my color A and chosen four different colors for my color B (Special DK in Gold, Camel, Copper and Mocha). I chose to use one color per part for color A and one color per part for color B.
I can image that using more different colors for the different parts will look great also. I know for sure it will look great with a solid color for color A and a self striping yarn for color B.
