A real sweetheart of a design!

This is a knitting pattern for a vintage inspired, baby girl’s matinee coat. The skirt of the coat is knitted in a 4-row mock-cable pattern that looks complex but is surprisingly easy to master. The coat is worked in once piece to the armholes, where the pattern changes to a ribbed bodice to give a perfect fit. Four heart-shaped buttons provide the finishing touch.

The sleeves are also worked in mock cable with an interesting pattern detail at the raglan. One of the above photos shows how the decreases are worked inside the first and last cables at the sleeve top so the cables run around the sleeve edge.

The coat takes around 200g of fine double knitting yarn and is worked on 3 mm and 3.75 mm needles

This is a real design classic that wouldn’t look out of place on the set of Call The Midwife! However, work it in a modern silky or luxury yarn to create a timeless treasure for today’s special baby.

PLEASE NOTE -- The matinee coat is displayed on a knitted baby mannequin. A pattern for this is also available in this shop in two sizes. The essential accessory for crafters, sellers and Etsy knitters
