I used 1 skein of a worsted weight yarn, but this cowl would also be beautiful in a bulky weight yarn (with larger needles), creating a cowl that would be wide enought to fit over the shoulders.

The Patons Classic Wool yarn is itchy. Be sure to pick a yarn that comfortable enough to wear around your neck.
