The Modernism Shawl design is from my recent book “A Knitter’s Guide to Shawl Design”.

It is inspired by an amazing building in the Californian City of Palm Springs, which was constructed in the architectural style known as “desert modern”.

The main shawl body comprises a geometric grid, representing the building tiles, which gradually emerges from an angled increase section. The grid is defined by raised ridges of reverse stocking stitch with intersecting smooth centres of stocking stitch. The grid pattern extends into the centre section of the shawl with the addition of an alternating textured-tile pattern.

The shawl is knitted with 5 x 50g skeins of Garthenor Organics Beacons DK in the wonderful shade of Raspberry.
