This is a modified version of the “Gloves for Service Men” published by the American Red Cross. I knitted those gloves, and while I liked the pattern, I realised a lot of knitters were having problems with the instructions, usually resulting in very large or misshaped gloves. So I clarified and modified the instructions to give a pleasing result while trying to stay close to the original pattern.

Now that the pattern works, these are great basic gloves!

  • I have uploaded the women’s version, which is available here.

  • Please note that the yarn called for in this pattern is worsted weight, which is usually knit with 4.5 - 5 mm needles, however the gloves are knit with 3 mm needles. This is meant to be so, it will result in a tight fabric providing for warm and cozy gloves!

I’m getting feedback that the gloves might me a bit narrow at the palm and fingers. To make them wider, just go up a needle size (gauge: 19-20 sts) or use a heavier yarn! As is, the size will be a small to medium men’s size; if you’re looking for a larger men’s size, make the suggested modifications.

Also, it is important for the finger length to measure from the point between the fingers where you cast on or pick up a stitch from the other finger, which will be at least 1/2 cm above the end of the palm; otherwise the fingers will turn out too short. Or, if you’re a lady and knitting for a guy, a good measure is to try on the gloves and knit to where your finger ends, then knit 2 more rounds and decrease and the size should be fine.
