Most rock at Capitol Reef National Park is sedimentary, formed in layers from loose materials, like mud and sand. 225 million years ago silt and clay settled in the quiet waters of mud flats and coastal flood plains creating what scientists call the Moenkopi Formation. The younger band of gray above the Moenkopi is called Shinarump from the Chinle Formation. Shinarump is a conglomerate rock containing ash and uranium. Which is scientific speak to really mean that all the strata add up to a beautiful layered gradation of color. This artwork was produced under the Artist in Residence Program at Capitol Reef National Park.
