Moher Beanie
The Moher Beanie is named after the famous Cliffs of Moher – a beautiful sight across the sea from Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands (where I was born and raised!) The Cliffs are also close to the home of Sionnach Yarns who handdyed the beautiful yarn for this hat.
As a knitter from the Aran Islands, I love adapting the Aran style to suit modern knitters. Here, I have taken a classic Aran style cable pattern and adapted the motif to work it in the round, on two sizes of circular needle. The finished hat is seamless, with the cables flowing from brim to crown without interruption.
The cabling pattern is not overly complicated; I would consider this a pattern suitable for intermediate knitters.
The hat is sized for an adult, and comes in two sizes, Small and Large. The Small size would equate to a traditional women’s size, and the Large would equate to a traditional men’s size. Aran weight yarn, or worsted weight yarn is recommended for this pattern.
The beanie measures around 16 inches (42 cm) in circumference (flat, unworn) in the Small size; and 18 inches (47 cm) in the Large size. Both beanies measure the same in height: 9¾ inches/25 cm from brim to crown. The small size is a one skein knit (100g); the large size took only one skein too, but there was some yarn chicken played near the end! 166m/188 yds is recommended for the large size.
