Moldau
“Vltava” (German: “Die Moldau”) was composed by Bedřich (Friedrich) Smetana in only 19 days during the winter of 1874. It is a 13 minutes long symphonic poem that celebrates the sounds of one of Bohemia’s great rivers.
Smetana’s own preface to the score depicts the scenes: two small springs skipping merrily along to unify into a single current, where the river Vltava starts undulating through woods and meadows, pursuing a smooth course under warm sun and night’s moonshine, foaming over rapids, flowing broad and strong into Prague and along it’s old castle to finally slow down and merge into the river Elbe.
In the pattern on these socks, you can easily imagine the ripples of the tiny springs, the undulations of the young Vltava and the majestic waves of the strong river at the end of its course.
I hope you’ll enjoy – the knitting as well as the wonderful piece of music.
