I enjoy using simple stitches in unusual ways to create interesting designs. My grandsons have never shown any interest in learning how to knit but all of them enjoy being involved in the design process. As I was working on this design my oldest grandson was quizing me about the process. He was particularly interested in how I decide on names for my designs. I explained that I try to use unusual or foreign language words as often as I can. As a fourth year Spanish student, he suggested that I name this one Molinillo, the Spanish word for pinwheet, because before blocking the shawl was definitely taking on a pinwheet shape. After blocking that shape was harder to see, but the name stuck anyway.

This shawl uses a simple repetitive lace pattern and an equally simple garter stitch pattern. What makes it different from many others is that the patterns are worked in wedges instead of across complete rows. This unique construction creates an interesting but hard to describe shape. There are 2 straight sides that lay across your shoulders and down your back, the center back wedge creates a curve that tends to ruffle when worn, and the two fronts are overlapping curves. When worn, the fronts lay quite nicely around the neck, overlapped, tied, or can be pinned on one or both sides to create lapels. Both stitch patterns are reversible so there is no “wrong side”.
