Molly Malone Poncho
My Molly Malone Poncho got it’s name because I displayed the first example I made on the famous Molly Malone statue in Dublin, Ireland (just long enough to take a quick photograph). It proved very popular with lots of nice comments when I showed it. Every time I wear mine someone stops me and asks about it or wants to buy it.
Since the first one (originally called Denim Lace Poncho) I have made a few improvements to the pattern to make it easier to knit and to be a larger, more comfortable size.
Blocking brings out the beautiful eyelet pattern in the poncho edging and the scallops. It is essential to use a very light weight, natural fibers yarn for this project. Fingering weight works best with US6/4mm needles. I like the yarns with very short color changes for this project. You could also use a gradient yarn.
I have also used lace weight yarn (purple/blue striped example photos) with US7/4.5mm needles for an airy and floaty poncho. In the example shown I chose to try out 3 scallops instead of the usual four.
Even though this poncho is so light weight and elegant, it provides cozy warmth for a cool day.
