The word Monadnock derives from a Abenaki word loosely translated as, “ mountain that stands alone”. Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire is one of the most climbed mountains in the world. At over 3,000 feet it’s a moderately challenging climb, with expansive views from the peak. Iconic American writers such as Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau wrote about Monadnock and have lookout points on the mountain named after them.

This hat with its handsome geometric pattern would keep you warm on a mountain hike, or anywhere you find yourself in the cooler weather. I consider it to be a good project for a beginner to stranded knitting because the color sections are fairly short and you won’t need to catch a ton of floats. I’ve included two charts, one with the lighter color dominant, and one with the darker color dominant. I think this makes it easier to work the color scheme of your choice. It uses worsted weight yarn on US size 7 needles with a gauge of 5 sts and 6 rows to the inch. It uses about 100 yards of color A and 100 yards of color B.

As written it produces an adult size large hat to fit a 22 inch head. Size can be adjusted by using different size yarn and needles, and/or adding or subtracting pattern repeats in multiples of 8. If you need help adjusting the pattern’s size I’m happy to help with calculations.
