The Monarch Shawl is a triangular Fair Isle shawl knit in the round from the bottom of the triangle to the top border. The center steek is then cut, and the side borders are picked up and knit on. Pom poms finish off each point of the triangle.

Sizes: One size, finished shawl is 84 in (213 cm) along the top edge

Yarn: Knit Picks Palette Fingering Weight 2-ply wool. Each ball is 50 g, 231 yards.

MC (7 balls): Bittersweet Heather; CC (1 ball each): Tomato, Cayenne, Orange, Sweet Potato, Golden Heather, Kumquat Heather; Border MC (3 balls): Wonderland Heather; Border CC (2 balls each): Grass, Hare Heather

Note: The CC for the Monarch butterfly pattern is knit in varying random lengths of the six orange shades. Make a variegated Orange Multi ball by arranging the shades from lightest to darkest and then back to lightest, cutting 4-12 meter lengths of each shade, and felting the ends together to avoid having to weave in all the ends. Start with shorter lengths at the bottom of the shawl and increase the lengths as the shawl gets wider toward the top.

Needles: Size US 4 (3.5 mm) circular, length 40 in (100 cm), tapestry needle
