The Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus, is perhaps the most famous butterfly in North America or even the world. These amazing creatures migrate northward up to 3000 miles
each spring after spending their winters in Mexico or California. Great clusters of them can be seen during the migration period, entire trees can be covered with their cinnamon, orange, and gold wings providing a most amazing sight. There are many unknowns about the Monarch’s migration process because the individuals never make the full round trip. It is their children’s grandchildren that return. This shawl’s pattern was influenced by the Monarch’s wings.

Should the completed shawl be worn by you for awhile and then passed on to a child or grandchild, well, that would seem appropriate, too.

The Monarch Shawl pattern has been updated to include a second size using 400yds/365 meters of fingering weight yarn and a size 6 or 7US needle. This update is included in Monarch Shawl version 1.4.

The Lace Hindwing Modification for the Monarch Shawl has been included in Monarch Shawl version 1.5.

On Row 15 of Extended Hindwing of v1.5 delete the second yarn over and next to last yarn over. (stitch #16 and 42 on the charts)
There was a missing symbol in the Extended Hindwing of v.1.5 Row 35, stitch 22 should be a k2tog. This omission has been corrected in v.1.6. My apologies!
