This is a knitted pattern for a lace cowl/hood. More specifically it is a Smokering, or NACHAQ: a seamless tubular garment that can be worn around the head as a hood or worn about the neck as a decorative accessory to any outfit.
The Oomingmak Co-Op in Alaska is known for its hand-knitted nachaqs. They are always lace patterns and usually knit with qiviut yarn however any fingering or lace weight wool works perfectly well for a NACHAQ. This is a one size pattern, and perfect gauge is not necessary. This pattern will teach you 4 different ways of knitting yarn over stitches. It is an easy pattern consisting of a 16 stitch pattern over 12 rows. Chart and written instructions are included. It is a one skein project.
