Monica Bucket Hat
This is the second pattern in a series of patterns which utilize my favorite stitch: the half double crochet in the very back loop. I’m naming this one after my best friend who happens to be an extremely talented fiber artist! In addition to being one of the smartest people I know, Monica radiates good energy, has an infectious laugh, and can make anyone smile.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED:
Tools: 4.00 mm crochet hook (or hook needed to obtain gauge) and your trusty scissors and stitch markers (if you use them). That’s it!
Yarn: 180 yards of a 4 medium weight yarn. I used a skein from Joann’s Big Twist Living line in a rainbow colorway called Inclusivity.
STITCHES USED (US TERMINOLOGY)
chain (ch)
double crochet (dc)
double crochet very back loop (dcvbl)
half double crochet (hdc)
half double crochet two together (hdc2tog)
half double crochet in the very back loop (hdcvbl)
slip stitch (ss)
GAUGE
Complete the first two rounds of the top of the hat as your swatch. These two rounds should measure 2” across the full diameter of the circle to create a finished hat that will fit head sizes 22.5 - 24.5 inches around. You can adjust your hook size to meet this gauge, or complete the first two rounds slightly larger or smaller than 2” to accommodate different head sizes.
CONSTRUCTION
The construction of this hat follows how most bucket hats are made: a flat circle for the top, followed by rounds (without increases or turning) for the body of the hat, and rounds of increases for the brim. You’ll end up with just 2 ends to weave in!
