Monotype Bag
A sturdy market bag with a satisfying stitch pattern

The Monotype bag is the perfect gift for that friend or family member who loves to spend weekends browsing farmers markets, going to craft fairs, or rummaging through thrift stores for a unique item. It’s a versatile size, and would be great for carrying produce and other market finds, a book, or the knitting project you’re currently working on.

The name of the bag comes from a printing technique that produces one unique piece of art. Often, this involves adding pigment directly to a flat plate and then transferring that design to paper that’s pressed onto the plate. This felt like a perfect name for a bag that’s comprised of such a unique stitch pattern, and which is designed to appeal to the lover of one off, artistic finds.

You will work the bag from the bottom up, starting with a rectangular base worked flat, before picking up stitches to knit in the round. The base and upper section are worked in a richly textured stitch pattern based on Barbara Walker’s Rosette Stitch. The main body of the bag is worked in an original mesh pattern inspired by crochet and macrame, and is designed to be well balanced and minimise stretch, resulting in a sturdy bag that holds onto its shape even when full.

The straps are worked in the round in one piece with the top of the bag and begin like giant buttonholes, binding off across the bottom of the opening and casting on for the edge of the straps. The last few rounds that form the straps and top border of the bag are worked in the same stitch pattern with the plain rounds omitted for the straps are strong enough to support a full bag with minimal stretch and without curling.

The Monotype Bag is worked in a low stretch, DK weight yarn and comes in one size.
