This is a replica of the iconic Marilyn Monroe cardigan made with cream wool and decorated with a black, brown and red geometric pattern across the center, cuffs and the neck, with a matching knitted belt.
It was worn by Marilyn Monroe in 1962 as she was photographed by George Barris on a beach in Santa Monica, California. Marilyn also wore it on June 1, 1962 (her final birthday) as she left Fox Studios during the filming of “Something’s Got To Give.” It was her last day of shooting on the film.
The original cardigan was made using a knitting loom, and therefore in the interest of staying as true as possible to the original look, this replica made for knitting needles has some unique stitch patterns and cast on/bind off techniques. Video tutorials are linked within the pattern to help with these techniques. There are graphs included for the Colorwork portions.
The cardigan is knit flat and seamed. Front and back pieces are knit from bottom up. Sleeves are knit from shoulder to cuff. Pockets are knit separately and sewn onto front pieces. Collar is also knit separately and sewn onto finished cardigan. Belt is secured with chain loops on each side.
A very special “Thank You!” to Melinda Turner of Fire Nails Studio for modeling this Cardigan!
