Monster Scrunchie
Difficulty level: Beginner
Time to make: 1-3 hours of relaxed knitting
For pattern enquires or pattern help: Becknitstitchrepeat !at gmail.com
I have written this scrunchie pattern for knitters to use as a scrap yarn buster. They’re pretty damn cute and good for the planet! I also think they make great gifts!
This Scrunchie can be knitted in the round or flat!
Gauge - using 8mm needles and 3 strands of dk yarn…
10 stitches (width): 10cm/4 inches
10 rows (length): 8cm/3 inches
Materials needed
Size 8mm circular needles, or straight size 8mm straight needles if you are knitting your scrunchie flat
Using a short cord like a 50 or 60cm cord would be easier, but I always use the magic loop method with whichever cord I find first!
Some yarn! See ‘yarn options’ and ‘sizes and yarn amounts’ for details!
Beginning of Round Marker
A darning needle
A pair of scissors
A measuring tape
Some elastic (I used 7mm wide stretchy elastic), you could also use a regular elastic hair tie or even a rubber band! When I made the scrunchies with elastic for sizes 1&2 I used a 9 inch piece of elastic, for size 3 I used a 10 inch piece of elastic and for size 4 I used an 11 inch piece of elastic.
Most test knitters used regular elastic hairbands and really loved the way it worked!

Monster Scrunchie Sizes & Yarn Amounts
There are 4 different sizes for different hair types and styles!
You can customise any of these sizes by changing the stitch count, the amount of rows and length of elastic you use.
This pattern is a stash buster and different types of yarn can be heavier than others (eg. cotton is heavier than merino).
Below are the measurements of scrunchies made from 3 strands of double knitting weight acrylic held together, using alternative yarn will change the measurements.
Scrunchie No.1 SMALL
The scrunchie will be 40cm/16 inches in circumference before adding the elastic which will scrunch it up
The diameter of the scrunchie will be approximately 5cm/2 inches
You will need approximately 26g/77m/84yds of scrap yarn to make this scrunchie
Scrunchie No.2 MEDIUM
The scrunchie will be 50cm/20 inches in circumference before adding the elastic which will scrunch it up
The diameter of the scrunchie will be approximately 6cm/2.4 inches
You will need approximately 36g/106m/116yds of scrap yarn to make this scrunchie
I made a size 2 scrunchie in malabrigo chunky yarn using one strand and it weighs 34g
Scrunchie No.3 LARGE
The scrunchie will be 60cm/24 inches in circumference before adding the elastic which will scrunch it up
The diameter of the scrunchie will be approximately 6cm/2.4 inches
You will need approximately 53g/156m/171yds of scrap yarn to make this scrunchie
Scrunchie No.4 EXTRA LARGE
The scrunchie will be 60cm/24 inches in circumference before adding the elastic which will scrunch it up
The diameter of the scrunchie will be approximately 8cm/3 inches
You will need approximately 58g/171m/187yds of scrap yarn to make this scrunchie
