Moomin Valley Socks
This Moomin Valley sock pattern is my tribute to the magic of Tove Jansson’s wonderful illustrations.
I was prompted to write it when the amazing Skein Queen dyed a limited edition batch of sock yarn in a colourway called ‘Moominvalley’. It was so gorgeous I thought it deserved its own pattern!
Featuring the Moomin House and little fluffy clouds in a repeat pattern around the leg, a solid colour toe and slip stitch heel, pinstripe gusset with apple trees and Snufkin’s favourite bridge on the instep, and a choice of 5 different patterns for the soles, including Moomin, a Hattifattener and the Groke. Topped off by an i-cord cuff, this pattern is probably best suited to someone familiar with sock knitting and colourwork techniques, or a confident beginner looking for a challenge!
Techniques used include a provisional cast on, i-cord cuff, slip stitch, corrugated rib, picking up stitches from a heel flap, and stranded colourwork. I have included step-by-step instructions for most of these techniques as they come up.
The pattern uses 100g 4ply sock yarn in the main colour (shown in Regia Extra Twist Merino in black) and 100g 4 ply sock yarn for the contrast colour (shown in Skein Queen Entwine ‘Moominvalley’ in pale blue speckles) and uses size 2.5mm double pointed needles to fit a womens UK size 6-7 foot. I have included instructions for sizing up or down and shortening/lengthening the foot, which may require a different size needle depending on your knitting tension.
You can choose to knit the socks in the colour combination of your choice. Please have a look at my shop for hand dyed sock yarns www.etsy.com/uk/shop/FHarbourYarn?section_id=18388870
I would love to see the finished results on my facebook page (www.facebook.com/FolkestoneHarbourYarn) or here on ravelry.
This is a fan tribute pattern & the credit for Moomin goes entirely to Tove Jansson, I have merely translated her work (to the best of my abilities) into a knitting pattern for socks.
