These fingerless mitts complement the Moon Phases Headband, and depict the lunar phases in a choice of a vertical arrangement, or a slanted arrangement - which suggests the elliptical orbit of the moon.

They are knitted in the round, and the thumb is knitted with a gusset, making these comfortable mitts to wear. If you want them to be a little looser or larger, use 4mm DPNs instead of 3.75mm.

The colourwork is only ever over six stitches in each round, and I suggest methods of making that work well with a kind of hybrid stranding arrangement. Alternatively, you could use the intarsia method.

Although I’ve suggested Jamieson’s of Shetland DK, you could, of course, use your preferred brand of DK to make your mitts. I found two balls of my background colour was enough to knit the matching headband with one my choices, and not quite with the other - so to be sure, if you want to knit both mitts and headband, I suggest you get three balls rather than two. You’ll only need one ball of your moon colour.

I’ve knitted these mitts for myself with Atlantic and Natural White, and with Cosmos and Eggshell - I’m not sure which I prefer, though I did like the idea of knitting the Cosmos!
