Mooncoin Fingerless Mitts
♪ The Music ♪
The Rose of Mooncoin is a ballad written in the 1800s by Watt Murphy, teacher ~ builder ~ writer and poet, for his lost love Elizabeth. Upon hearing of their romance, Elizabeth’s parents sent her from her home in County Kilkenny, Ireland to England; Watt was heart-broken and composed this tune in her memory. In part the lyrics say: “Where the thrush and the robin their sweet notes entwine” - what a beautiful image to translate into cables.
Pattern Notes
The Mooncoin Fingerless Mitts incorporate narrow staghorn and honeycomb cables into the ribbing portion of the cuff. The narrow staghorn cable leads into the main Mooncoin cable on the back of each mitt; this main cable is flanked on either side by the narrow honeycomb cable. The palm and thumb are worked in Stockinette stitch. The honeycomb cable extends into the Top Ribbing; the thumb is finished in 1x1 ribbing.
Pattern is charted with written directions for the charts provided in a separate PDF. Each mitt and size has its own chart.

Construction Notes
The mitts are knit in the round, from the cuff upward, beginning with an Estonian Cast On (or stretchy cast on of your choice). Increases are worked to form the thumb gusset. Thumb stitches are then placed on waste yarn while the upper portion of the mitt is worked. Stitches are picked up at the gap above the thumb gusset and are worked along with the held stitches to create the thumb. Bind off is done ‘in pattern’ i.e. knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
Two additional PDFs are included with this pattern:
• a picture tutorial for the Estonian Cast On
• written directions for charts
