Moonshine and Solar Flare
Increasing shawl shapes
These flared shawls are knitted sideways, mostly in garter stitch, with increases worked along one edge to create the triangular shape.
Single pattern includes tutorials for increasing using kfb and m1 sts, as well as how to work slipped sts.
Refer to materials below for different options. Pattern is adjustable - you can use any yarn you want to achieve different effects and make it as deep/long as you like, working until you run out of yardage.
Moonshine: Large Shawl
(Worsted and Laceweight): Option A
Yarn:
Worsted weight (MC): 200m (219yds) needed
• Shown in: Rowan Pure Wool Worsted 100% wool, 200m (219yds) per 100g in 150 Damson
• Note: Sample used almost a full ball of MC. To be safe, make sure you have extra yardage available.
Laceweight (CC): 336m (365yds) needed
• Shown in: Rowan Kidsilk Haze 70% mohair, 30% silk, 210m (229yds) per 25g in 579 Splendour
Needles:
5mm (US 8) needles
Gauge (given after blocking):
• 16 sts and 30 rows per 10cm (4in) measured over Garter st on 5mm needles, using worsted weight
Finished Measurements:
• 70.5cm (29in) at deepest point
• 145cm (57in) along longest edge
Solar Flare: Shallow Shawl
(4ply and Laceweight): Option B
Yarn:
4ply weight (MC): 365m (400yds) needed
• Shown in: Fyberspates Scrumptious 4ply/sport 55% merino, 45% silk, 365m (400yds) per 100g in 302 Gold
• Note: Sample used almost a full ball of MC. To be safe, make sure you have extra yardage available.
Laceweight (CC): 50m (55yds) needed
• Shown in: Rowan Kidsilk Haze 70% mohair, 30% silk, 210m (229yds) per 25g in 666 Alhambra
Needles:
3.75mm (US 5) needles
Gauge (given after blocking):
• 22 sts and 44 rows per 10cm (4in) measured over Garter st on 3.75mm needles, using 4ply
Finished Measurements:
• 37cm (14.5in) along cast-off edge
• 150cm (59in) along longest edge
